What is Dengue Fever?

Symptoms of dengue fever usually begin 4 to 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Common signs include: 

  • High fever 
  • Severe headache 
  • Pain behind the eyes 
  • Joint and muscle
  • pain 
  • Nausea or vomiting 
  • Swollen glands 
  • A blotchy skin rash 

Seek urgent medical help if you experience severe stomach pain, bleeding gums, blood in vomit or stools, or fast breathing after recent travel to a dengue-affected country. 

How to Protect Against Dengue

There is no specific cure for dengue, which makes dengue fever prevention the best approach. To reduce your risk while travelling: 

  • Wear long-sleeved tops and trousers to limit skin exposure. Use insect repellents containing DEET or picaridin. 
  • Sleep under mosquito nets in areas where insects are common. 
  • Keep windows and doors closed or use screens. 

These practical steps greatly reduce the chances of mosquito bites and help protect against dengue. 

Managing Dengue Fever

Most people with dengue infection recover within a few days. You can ease symptoms by: 

  • Resting and staying hydrated 
  • Taking paracetamol to lower fever and ease pain 
  • Avoiding ibuprofen and aspirin, which can increase bleeding risks 

Those at higher risk – including pregnant women, very young children, older adults, or people with medical conditions – should take extra care and consider seeking advice before travelling to dengue-affected areas.
